US Senate clears Invoice backing Tibet

Dharamsala, December 22

The US Senate today unanimously passed the Tibetan Policy and Support Act (TPSA) of 2020 that had been stuck at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee since May.

Bars Chinese interference

  • It recognises Dalai Lama’s authority over religious matters
  • Makes Chinese interference punishable with sanctions

Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) president Lobsang Sangay, who is in Washington, said in a statement issued here that it was a historical achievement for the Tibetan movement as the TPSA makes it the official US policy that decisions regarding the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama are exclusively within the authority of the Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhist leaders and the Tibetan people.

The Bill commends the Dalai Lama for his decision to implement democratic governance. It acknowledges the CTA as the legitimate institution reflecting the aspirations of Tibetans. The TPSA also introduces provisions to protect the environment and water resources on the Tibetan plateau. — TNS
