Taking up the difficulty of spurious liquor deaths in three Majha districts, Punjab ministers at a Cabinet assembly immediately pressed for stern motion in opposition to excise and police officers, saying that as an alternative of going after small operators, the masterminds of the illicit liquor commerce have to be nabbed.

Citing the instance of a Ludhiana dealer booked within the case, one of many ministers identified that the police had but to catch these chargeable for supplying denatured spirit. Another minister sought to know the motion taken in opposition to the SSPs transferred out of the affected districts — Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur — and the motion initiated in opposition to excise officers for failure to observe distilleries wherein some politicians had stakes. Ministers Sukhjinder Randhawa and Bharat Bhushan Ashu demanded that PCOCA (Punjab Control of Organised Crime Act) be slapped on the accused as crime syndicates continued to be run from jail cells with a number of hardcore criminals suspected to have ties with “terrorists”.
