Pilot amongst 16 killed after Air India Express airplane with 191 on board overshoots runway at Kozhikode

A pilot was amongst 16 lifeless when an Air India Express flight from Dubai with 191on board crash landed at Kozhikode airport on Friday night, police sources mentioned on Friday.

“The mishap occurred at 1941 hrs. No fire was reported at the time of landing,” a press release from Air Indian Express mentioned.

Police mentioned 16 folks had been killed within the accident.

The Civil Aviation Ministry mentioned the flight IX 1344 operated by B737 plane from Dubai overshot runway at Kozhikode at 7.41 PM on Friday. “No fire reported at the time of landing,” it famous.

There had been 174 passengers, 10 Infants , 2 Pilots and 5 cabin crew on board the plane, the ministry added.

“As per the initial reports rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care. We will soon share the update in this regard,” the ministry acknowledged  Help centres are being arrange in Sharjah and Dubai, the assertion mentioned.

The airplane reportedly overshot the runway and fell into the valley, breaking into two parts. 

Kozhikode airport is a tabletop airport.

There had been 84 passengers and crew on the flight.

NDTV mentioned a number of passengers had been wounded and admitted to eight hospitals.

It had been raining closely on the time of the incident.

An announcement issued by Rajeev Jain, Additional Director General of the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Media unit mentioned: “Air India Express flight IX 1344 operated by B737 aircraft from Dubai to Calicut overshot runway at Kozhikode at 1941 hrs tonight. No fire reported at the time of landing.  There are 174 passengers, 10 infants, 2 Pilots and 5 cabin crew on board the aircraft.  As per the initial reports rescue operations are on and  Passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care. We will soon share the update in this regard”.

The airline additionally mentioned that the plane apparently overshot the runway.

Air India Express has solely Boeing 737 planes in its fleet.

Television stories mentioned that rescue operations had been underway.

Captain Deepak Sathe, one of many two pilots who died within the crash, was a former Indian Air Force fighter jet pilot. He was former MiG 21 pilot with Indian Air Force’s 17 squadron (Golden Arrows), Ambala. The squadron went to Kargil battle 1999. Capt Sathe was an teacher at Air Force Training Academy.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan mentioned police and firefighters have been directed to take all measures for rescue and reduction operations.

“Have instructed Police and Fire Force to take urgent action in the wake of the plane crash at the Kozhikode International airport (CCJ) in Karipur. Have also directed the officials to make necessary arrangements for rescue and medical support,” Vijayan mentioned in a tweet.

Kerala Chief Minister’s Office mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over the telephone. 

“CM informed PM that a team of officials including Kozhikode & Malappuram District Collectors & IG Ashok Yadav have arrived at the airport & participating in the rescue operation,” the CMO assertion mentioned. 

Reactions

Politicians took to social media to voice their shock and grief on the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned in a tweet: “Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Kerala CM Vijayan Pinarayi”.

Home Minister Amit Shah mentioned he was “distressed” concerning the incident.

“Distressed to learn about the tragic accident of Air India Express aircraft in Kozhikode, Kerala. Have instructed NDRF to reach the site at the earliest and assist with the rescue operations,” he mentioned in a tweet.—Agencies
