Azad urges Centre to revive reservation for Engineers’ SHGs in J-Ok govt contracts
Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday expressed concern on the determination of the Jammu and Kashmir administration to scrap the scheme of reserving a share of presidency contracts works for Self Help Groups of Engineers.
He urged the Centre to intervene to make sure the restoration of the scheme which offers an avenue for self-employment to engineers.
Raising the matter throughout Zero Hour, Azad stated the scheme was began in 2003 by Congress-PDP authorities.
As per the scheme, the Self Help Groups of the Engineers have been awarded contract works. Over the years, 15,000 engineers had acquired experience and developed into contractors.
He stated 10 per cent of presidency works have been reserved for these engineers.
The group of such engineers who attained experience have been awarded works as much as rupees one crore.
He stated that because the particular standing of the Jammu and Kashmir was carried out away with, and in the course of the turbulence, sectors like tourism have been adversely affected. There was a lack of jobs.
The Centre should intervene instantly to revive the scheme, Azad stated.
