Martyr’s statue put in after 21-year battle

Palampur, August 29

After struggling for almost 21 years, the household of martyr Major Sudhir Kumar Walia, an Ashok Chakra awardee, managed to get his statue put in within the coronary heart of Palampur city as we speak.

It was the martyr’s 21st loss of life anniversary as we speak.

Having sacrificed his life preventing militants in Jammu and Kashmir in 1999 on the age of 28, Major Sudhir was posthumously awarded the nation’s highest peacetime army ornament in January 2000.

Subedar Rulia Ram (retd), Major Sudhir’s father, needed to run from pillar to publish to get his demand accepted for a statue both in Palampur or their native Banuri village in Kangra district.

It was after The Tribune highlighted the difficulty just lately that the native administration obtained cracking and introduced the statue can be opened to the general public on his loss of life anniversary. — OC
