India to import over 30,000 tonnes of onions, potatoes

New Delhi, October 30

India will import over 30,000 tonnes onions and potatoes to stem rising prices, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said amid reports of soaring prices.

Goyal said on Friday that his government will import 30,000 tonnes of potato from Bhutan.  He said that the government had already imported 7,000 tonnes of onions, and expected 25,000 tonnes more to arrive before Diwali.

The statement comes as retail prices of vegetables continue to soar across the country. —-Agencies
