Shimla, November 23

Worried over the sudden spurt in Covid cases in the state, the Himachal cabinet on Monday imposed night curfew in the four districts of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi and Kangra, which are fast emerging as Covid hotspots.

Curfew will be enforced in all four districts from 8 pm to 6 am till December 15, when the decision will be reviewed.

The move has been prompted with Shimla and Mandi reporting almost 2,000 cases in the last fortnight with a daily average of 10 deaths.

The fine for not wearing masks has also been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.

The cabinet also decided to keep educational institutes closed, both for teachers as well as students till December 31.

The final examinations that were to take place in December will now be held in March. So far, only students from Classes 9 to 12 were allowed to come to school but it was mandatory for teachers to be present.

The cabinet also decided to revert to the system of calling government employees to office on alternate days with a maximum of 50 per cent occupancy on any working day.
