Guntur Collector orders arrest of physician for mentioning scarcity of COVID beds

In a blatant disregard for rule of regulation, Guntur Collector Samuel Anand Kumar misplaced his cool and ordered the arrest of a physician who raised the difficulty of scarcity of beds for COVID-19 sufferers at a assessment assembly.

In video that went viral, the Collector is heard saying, “What nonsense, how dare he call me. Arrest him immediately.”    

The incident occurred in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, throughout a assessment assembly being held on the Town Hall when Dr Somlu Naik, a Medical Officer working at Nandendla Primary Healthcare Centre, identified the scarcity of beds. 

Kumar misplaced his cool and ordered Dr Naik’s suspension and arrest. The whole incident was caught on digicam. 

Sources mentioned that the Collector first contradicted the priority raised by Dr Naik by saying, “This was not true.” He requested if the priority was raised earlier than the District Medical Health Officer (DMHO).  

When Dr Naik quietly tried to take his seat within the auditorium of the Town Hall, the Collector, who is just heard and can’t be seen within the video, mentioned: “What nonsense. Where is this doctor from? Take him away and arrest him. How dare he asks me – who am I? Arrest him under disaster management sections. Take him away.”  

 

Kumar then directed the DMHO Dr J Yasmin to droop Dr Naik and directed Nasaraopet DSP Veera Reddy to arrest him proper there.

The police took Dr Naik to Narasaraopet DSP workplace and later launched him.

The DMHO later mentioned: “No disciplinary action has been taken so far as no instruction has come from the Collector’s office.” 

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh, who’s an MLC, tweeted the video and wrote: “This is Jagan Mohan Reddy government’s atrocity on a tribal officer.”

I condemn his brutal arrest. Somlu Naik must be launched instantly!” 

The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors’ Association has additionally condemned the incident. The affiliation has warned of a strike if arrest orders weren’t withdrawn and demanded a departmental inquiry into the alleged lapses identified by Dr Naik.
