Smartphone is Kusum’s most prized possession and he or she ensures it stays inside her attain, checking it each few seconds for brand new messages — “probably teachers sending online work or classmates enquiring about classes”.

Can’t afford another phone either,” she says sitting on her hospital mattress. An aspiring police officer, Kusum has learnt Taekwondo for a couple of months — and the teachings got here in useful.

Giving a phrase of recommendation to women caught in an analogous scenario, she says: “Never let fear conquer your mind and don’t let your enemy know about it. Just fight off everything and you will eventually win.”
