New Delhi, January 12

Air India, SpiceJet, Indigo and Go Air will on Tuesday operate nine fights to 13 cities, including Chandigarh, to deliver the first 56.5 lakh doses of Covid vaccines.

Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Puri in a morning update on Twitter said the civil aviation sector had launched yet another momentous mission.

“Vaccine movement starts. First two flights operated by @flyspicejet and goairlinesindia from Pune to Delhi and Chennai have taken off,” the minister said as India prepared to roll out vaccines from January 16 and reach bulk doses to cold storage depots at major locations for onward distribution to vaccine sessions sites, ahead of the January 16 launch.

The minister said, “Today Air India, Spice Jet, Go Air and Indigo will operate 9 flights from Pune with 56.5 lakh doses to Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Chandigarh.”

The government on Monday had ordered a purchase of 11 million doses of Covishield from Serum Institute, Pune, and around three million doses of COVAXIN from Bharat Biotech with PM Narendra Modi telling states that the Centre would foot the bill of the first three crore doses for one crore health workers and two crore frontline workers.

He had warned the states of mala fide attempts to derail the world’s largest vaccine campaign with rumours and misinformation saying corporate competition was also coming in.

The PM asked states to rope in social and religious leaders to boost vaccine confidence and fight fake news.
