44 nodal officers to crack down on terror-funding


New Delhi, July 29

As many as 44 senior officers of the Central, state and Union Territory governments, in addition to entities just like the RBI and SEBI, have been designated because the nodal authority for seizure of funds and different monetary property held by these supporting or engaged in terrorism, officers stated on Wednesday. According to an official memorandum, the nodal officers have been designated for the implementation of Section 51A of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act ( UAPA), 1967.

Section 51A of the UAPA says that for the prevention of, and for dealing with terror actions, the Central Government shall have energy to: (a) freeze, seize or connect funds and different monetary property or financial sources held by, on behalf of or on the course of the people or entities listed within the Schedule to the Order, or every other individual engaged in or suspected to be engaged in terrorism.

(b) Prohibit any particular person or entity from making any funds, monetary property or financial sources or associated companies out there for the advantage of the people or entities listed within the Schedule to the Order or every other individual engaged in or suspected to be engaged in terrorism.

(c) Prevent the entry into or the transit by way of India of people listed within the Schedule to the Order. — PTI

UAPA sec 51a: Power to freeze property

Section 51A of the UAPA says that for the prevention of, and for dealing with terror actions, the Central Government shall have energy to freeze, seize or connect funds and different monetary property or financial sources held by, on behalf of or on the course of the people or entities listed within the Schedule to the Order, or every other individual engaged in or suspected to be engaged in terrorism.
