Tokyo-bound Bhavani wins ninth nationwide title

Rudrapur (Uttarakhand), March 21

CA Bhavani Devi, who recently became the first-ever Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympic Games, won her ninth title at the 31st Senior National Fencing Championships here last night. Tamil Nadu’s Bhavani defeated Jaspreet Kaur of Jammu and Kashmir 15-2 in her opening pool match in the women’s sabre competition. She had to ward off a tough fight from Telangana’s Baby Reddy, eventually winning 15-14 to get through to the quarterfinals, where she trounced Punjab’s Jagmeet Kaur 15-7. In the semifinals, Bhavani beat K Anitha 15-4. Then, in a late-night final, she overcame Joshna Joseph of Kerala 15-7. — Agencies
