Serena Williams shook off some Covid-19 layoff rust to grind out a 7-6(6) 3-6 7-6(0) win over Dutch qualifier Arantxa Rus yesterday to maneuver into the third spherical of the Western and Southern Open.
Japan’s Naomi Osaka, competing in her first WTA singles match because the season resumed, battled previous Karolina Muchova 6-7(5) 6-Four 6-2 to arrange a conflict with Dayana Yastremska. She was joined within the third spherical by former champion Victoria Azarenka, who staved off a late comeback try by Caroline Garcia to prevail 6-2 7-6(8). Twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova departed following a 2-6 7-5 6-2 defeat by Marie Bouzkova.
Pain within the neck
Novak Djokovic had withdrawn from a doubles match resulting from a neck challenge and confirmed indicators of discomfort in a 7-6(2) 6-Four win over Ricardas Berankis. “It’s getting better … it’s not yet where I’d like it to be but it’s heading in the right direction,” stated Djokovic, who meets Tennys Sandgren subsequent.
Murray stuns Zverev
