France’s Gael Monfils revealed on Friday that he had been racially abused on Instagram following his early exit on the Italian Open in Rome.

Fifth seed Monfils, who had obtained a bye into the second spherical, misplaced 6-2 6-Four to Dominik Koepfer on Thursday after which he obtained the abusive feedback as private messages, with one fan calling him a “stupid black monkey” and “slave”.

World No. 9 Monfils, 34, was taking part in the German, who’s ranked 97, in his first match in practically seven months after the season resumed following the COVID-19 hiatus.
