Bengaluru, January 18
Captain Mandeep Singh struck an unbeaten 99 off 66 balls, with nine fours and four sixers, to help Punjab beat Tripura by 22 runs in a Group A match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. With their fifth win in a row, Punjab topped the table in Group A and qualified for the quarterfinals.
Tripura’s decision to field first backfired as Punjab romped to 183/3 in 20 overs.
Coming in to bat in the second over, after the fall of Abhishek Sharma (0), Mandeep took control of the situation and, after Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed for 9, added 110 runs in 11.1 overs with Gurkeerat Mann, who struck six sixers and three fours in his 33-ball 66.
Tripura did their best in the chase, with opener Udiyan Bose (50 off 37 balls) and No. 4 Milind Kumar (64* off 40) striking half-centuries, but they could take their team to only 161/4. Pace bowler Sandeep Sharma was impressive, conceding only 21 runs in four overs, picking up one wicket. Harpreet Brar, Baltej Singh and Arshdeep Singh also picked up a wicket each.
Brief scores: Punjab 183/3 (Mandeep 99*, Mann 66); Tripura 161/4 (Milind 64*, Bose 50). — Agencies
