Chennai, February 5
Virat Kohli helping his opposite number Joe Root deal with cramps became one of the moments of Day 1, and Root said he’s fine and prepared to prolong India’s wait on the field.
“Yeah, I am ready for more tomorrow… Very kind of Virat (Kohli) to help me out (with cramps), good sportsmanship from him,” Root said. “It’s just like a long day and then after a few overs I get some fluids and cooled down.”
About how many runs could be scored in the first innings, Root said: “We have got to look and try and get as many as we can 600-700 if we can, really trying to make most of the first innings make it good and those four overs trying to work quickly.”
Incidentally, the last time England played in Chennai, they batted first and made 477 but still lost by an innings — because India piled up 759/7, with Karun Nair scoring 303 not out and KL Rahul making 199.
It’s that experience that makes Root target 700 this time. “So if we can bat into whole of tomorrow or maybe Day 3 then things could speed up quite quickly for us and you never know what can happen for that point onwards,” he said. — Agencies
