Indian males, girls in Asian chess finals

New Delhi, October 24

B Adhiban and R Vaishali shone bright as the top-seeded Indian men’s and women’s teams entered the finals of the Asian Nations Online chess championship with victories over Kazakhstan and Mongolia, respectively, today.

While the men beat Kazakhstan 2.5-1.5 and 3-1 in the two-leg semifinal, the women’s side posted 3.5-0.5 and 4-0 wins over Mongolia. The women will meet Indonesia in the finals on Sunday.

The Indian team, led by Surya Sekhar Ganguly, faces Australia in Sunday’s final. Ganguly didn’t play any match on Saturday.

B Adhiban notched important victories over Rinat Jumabayev on the top board in both his matches. In the first match, Nihal Sarin, SP Sethuraman and K Sasikiran drew their games, and Adhiban’s win proved decisive.

In the second match, Adhiban, Sarin and Sethuraman won their games but Sasikiran suffered a defeat.

In the women’s semifinal, India were in dominant form as Vaishali won both her games against Batkhuyag Munguntuul. Padmini Rout and PV Nandhidhaa recorded wins in the first match, while the quartet of Vaishali, Bhakti Kulkarni, Rout and Nandhidhaa earned full points in the second match. — PTI
