Nikolai Snesarev, the long distance national athletics coach from Belarus, was found dead in his room at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) here in the evening today. Sources informed that the 72-year-old Belarusian coach did not turn up for the Indian Grand Prix-3, which was going on just 100 metres away from his room at the International Hostel at NIS.
After the event, a group of foreign coaches, wondering why Snesarev was not present at the competition, went to his room at around 6.30PM and found it locked from inside. The coaches the called the security guards of NIS and broke open the door of his room. When they got in, they found the coach lying on his bed. He was immediately rushed to the health centre of NIS, where he was declared brought dead.
His body was shifted to the Government Rajindra Hospital for post mortem later in the evening.
Meanwhile, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) condoled the death of Snesarev. “We are stunned by the news that coach Nikolai was found dead in his room today. He returned to India only a few days ago, having agreed to train steeplechaser Avinash Sable for the Olympic Games in Tokyo,” AFI president Adille J Sumariwalla said. “We will cherish his long association with Indian athletics and will miss him.”
