2 from Haryana amongst three race walkers qualify for Tokyo

Ranchi, February 13

Two Haryana athletes were among three race walkers who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics today with impressive performances at the National Open Race Walking Championships here today.

Haryana’s Sandeep Kumar and Priyanka Goswami of Uttar Pradesh shattered national records in the men’s and women’s 20km races, respectively.

With today’s results, a total of five Indian race walkers have qualified for the Tokyo Games, scheduled to be held in July-August.

Sandeep, 34, clocked 1 hour, 20 minutes and 16 seconds to win the men’s 20km event, finishing 10 seconds ahead of Rahul Kumar, also of Haryana. Rahul too qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.

The 24-year-old Priyanka Goswami won the women’s 20km event with a time of 1:28.45. The three also qualified for the 2022 World Athletics Championships to be held in Eugene, USA.
