Beijing/Washington, July 22
The US has instructed China to shut its consulate in Houston, additional deteriorating bilateral ties. A supply mentioned Beijing was contemplating shutting the US consulate in Wuhan in retaliation.
Washington “abruptly demanded” closure of the Houston consulate on Wednesday, China’s international ministry mentioned. The editor of an official media outlet mentioned China had been given 72 hours to take action.
The State Department mentioned the transfer was made “to protect American intellectual property and American’s private information”. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repeated accusations about Chinese theft of US and European mental property.
Local media later reported paperwork had been burned in a courtyard on the consulate. — Reuters
