Seven girls, together with the firecracker unit licensee and her kin, have been killed and two staff critically injured in an explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Kattumannarkoil right here on Friday, police mentioned.
Chief Minister Ok Palaniswami, who expressed his condolences to the bereaved households, introduced a compensation of Rs two lakh every to them.
The manufacturing unit proprietor Gandhimathi and eight different girls have been allegedly concerned in making nation firecrackers on the unit in Kurungudi village in Kattumannarkoil when a sudden explosion ripped by the construction, killing 5 girls, police mentioned.
Four others who have been injured have been later rescued from the concrete particles by the locals and admitted to a hospital right here.
While two girls succumbed later, the remaining two are present process remedy.
“The licensee and four of her kin died in the blast while two other women died at the hospital,” Cuddalore District Superintendent of Police M Sree Abhinav instructed PTI.
“We are investigating the cause of the blast. There was no fire mishap. Probably some chemical substance like nitrate was stocked at the factory,” Abhinav mentioned.
Nitrates are widespread elements of fertilisers and explosives.
Apart from Gandhimathi, Malarkodi, Latha, Rajathi, Chitra, Rukmani and Rathinammal died within the blast.
“Hearing the news about the death of seven women in the blast is distressing. I express my heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families,” Chief Minister Palaniswami mentioned and introduced a solatium of Rs two lakh every to the affected households.
He mentioned he had directed Industries Minister M C Sampath and the District Collector to make sure applicable remedy to the injured and likewise go to the grieving households and console them.
