Taking up the problem of spurious liquor deaths in three Majha districts, Punjab ministers at a Cabinet assembly as we speak pressed for stern motion towards excise and police officers, saying that as an alternative of going after small operators, the masterminds of the illicit liquor commerce should be nabbed.
Citing the instance of a Ludhiana dealer booked within the case, one of many ministers identified that the police had but to catch these liable for supplying denatured spirit. Another minister sought to know the motion taken towards the SSPs transferred out of the affected districts — Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur — and the motion initiated towards excise officers for failure to watch distilleries wherein some politicians had stakes. The Opposition has been accusing Congress MLAs of defending these concerned within the illicit liquor enterprise and liquor smuggling.
Ministers Sukhjinder Randhawa and Bharat Bhushan Ashu demanded that PCOCA (Punjab Control of Organised Crime Act) be slapped on the accused as crime syndicates continued to be run from jail cells with a number of hardcore criminals suspected to have ties with “terrorists”.
