Many states, UTs not offering particulars of farmer suicides: MHA tells RS

The authorities on Monday stated many states and Union Territories haven’t offered particulars of farmer suicides and therefore, the nationwide knowledge on the causes of suicide within the farming sector is “untenable” and can’t be printed.

Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy stated as knowledgeable by the National Crime Records Bureau, many states and UTs have reported “nil” knowledge on suicides by farmers, cultivators and agricultural labourers after a number of validations, even whereas reporting suicides in different professions.

“Due to this limitation, national data on the causes of suicide in the farming sector was untenable and not published separately,” he stated in a written reply.

According to the newest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) knowledge on unintentional deaths and suicides, 10,281 farmers dedicated suicide in 2019, down from 10,357 in 2018.

The suicide price within the farming sector accounted for 7.Four per cent of the entire suicides within the nation —  5,957 farmers and 4,324 agricultural labourers, the NCRB stated within the report containing the newest knowledge. PTI
