New Delhi, October 18
The Congress will on October 31 hold satyagrahas and fasts to protest against “attacks on democracy” by the BJP government with party chief Sonia Gandhi asking cadres to toil hard and defeat the “autocratic designs” of the Centre.
Taking a dig at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of the Hathras tragedy, Sonia, at a virtual meeting of AICC general secretaries and in-charges said, “Atrocities on Dalits have reached a new zenith. Instead of honouring the law and granting adequate protection to India’s daughters, BJP governments are siding with the criminals. The voice of oppressed families is being suppressed by the agencies of the state. Is this the new raj dharma?”
She said, “Democracy is passing through its most tumultuous times. There is a designed attack on our Constitution and democratic traditions. Our country is ruled by a government, which is systematically bartering the interests of our citizens at the altar of profiteering by handful of crony capitalists. The current BJP government has attacked the very foundation of our resilient agrarian economy by bringing in three anti-agriculture black laws.”
Sonia said a conspiracy had been hatched to defeat the gains of “Green Revolution” and the country had been pushed into the abyss of the Covid-19 pandemic by sheer ineptitude and mismanagement of the government.
Sonia gave a call for a national agitation against the BJP with AICC general secretary organisation KC Venugopal later saying fasts would be observed at all district headquarters on October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel and the death anniversary of former PM Indira Gandhi.
“In line with the concerted opposition to the anti-farmer legislations and our committed fight for justice for the rape victim in Hathras, it has been decided to observe October 31 as ‘Kisan Adhikar Divas’ and Satyagrah and fasts will be held at every district headquarter between 10 am and 4 pm against anti-farmer and anti-labour laws,” Venugopal said. He said on November 5, the party will observe Mahila and Dalit Utpidan Virodhi Divas with protests at every state headquarters.
