Govt notifies new enhanced pictorial well being warnings for tobacco merchandise

The Ministry of Health on Thursday notified new units of specified well being warnings for all tobacco product packs by making an modification within the Cigarettes and different Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules, 2008.

The amended guidelines can be relevant from December 1, 2020 and can be in pressure until 12 months thereafter.

The Union Health Ministry on Thursday notified new units of specified well being warnings with enhanced pictorial photographs to be printed on all tobacco merchandise.

The Cigarettes and different Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Third Amendment Rules, 2020 will come into impact from December 1.

It amends the Cigarettes and different Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules, 2008.

All tobacco merchandise manufactured or imported or packaged on or after December 1, 2020 shall show the primary set of photographs, whereas the second set of photographs can be displayed by the tobacco merchandise manufactured or imported or packaged on or after December 1, 2021, the Health Ministry stated in a press release.

“Any particular person engaged straight or not directly within the manufacture, manufacturing, provide, import or distribution of cigarettes or any tobacco merchandise shall be sure that all tobacco product packages shall have the desired well being warnings precisely as prescribed.

“Violation of the above mentioned provision is a punishable offence with imprisonment or fine as prescribed in Section 20 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003,” the Health ministry stated in its assertion.
