In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old boy was set ablaze by a drunken father angered over the boy watching television when he was supposed to be studying. The incident took place in the Kukatpally Housing Board Colony (KPHB) area in the city late last night.
According to the FIR registered by the police, the accused identified as a painter named Balu set his son on fire when he returned home to see his son watching television instead of studying. The son Charan ignored his father who was drunk, angered at this the father took the drastic step.
Police said Charan was a Class 6 student at a Government School in Kukatpally. The schools have remained shut for almost a year due to COVID-19. The father told his son that he was expected to study rather than waste his time.
After Charan was doused and set ablaze, family and neighbours immediately rushed for help and shifted the boy to Osmania General Hospital, where he is being treated for burn injuries. His condition is said to be critical, but doctors are hopeful that may be able to get past the dangerous phase.
The KPHB police are investigating the matter and have lodged a formal complaint against the father, who the police say is very repentant for his action during a drunken fit.
