Election Commission tightens norms on candidates’ legal document

Ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls, the Election Commission (EC) in the present day mentioned it had made the norms of publicity of legal antecedents of candidates stringent by placing a timeline on when such commercials must be printed and broadcast throughout electioneering.

In October 2018, the EC had made it obligatory for candidates contesting elections and the events fielding them to promote their legal antecedents on TV and in newspapers not less than 3 times throughout electioneering.

Now, the EC has made it clear that the primary “publicity” of legal information must be throughout the first 4 days of the final date of withdrawal of candidature. It mentioned the second publicity must be throughout the fifth and eighth day of the final date of withdrawal and the third and remaining publicity must be from the ninth day until the day marketing campaign ends, which is 48 hours previous to the voting day.

“This timeline will help voters exercise their choices in more informed manner,” the ballot panel mentioned in a press release.
