DRI seizes gold value Rs 7 crore smuggled into India from Myanmar, six accused held

Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized gold value Rs seven crore, smuggled into India from Myanmar, in separate operations in three states, based on an official assertion issued on Friday.

Six individuals have additionally been arrested in the course of the operations carried out by the DRI officers on Tuesday, it stated.

“All the seized foreign-origin gold bars had been smuggled into India from Myanmar and were being carried to Delhi by passengers travelling in buses via Guwahati, Siliguri and Patna,” the assertion issued by the DRI’s Delhi zonal unit stated.

The gold bars have been discovered to have been hid in specifically made cavities within the handles of stroller luggage carried by the passengers and in addition hidden contained in the underwear/waist belts worn by them, it stated.

“Amid COVID, the carriers of the smuggled gold are using bus route with premise that due to COVID, there would be fewer checks en route,” the DRI stated.

Giving particulars of the circumstances, the probe company stated two individuals have been intercepted at Jewar toll plaza close to Delhi who have been coming by bus from Guwahati by way of Siliguri and Patna.

The officers recovered round 4.98 kg of smuggled gold bars from them, the assertion stated.

Two different passengers have been intercepted by the officers at Siliguri (West Bengal) bus station after they have been boarding a bus sure for Patna and seized from their possession 30 smuggled foreign-origin gold bars, collectively weighing 4.98 kg, it stated.

In Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, two individuals, who had arrived in Patna by bus from Guwahati (by way of Siliguri), have been intercepted by the officers.

A complete of 24 gold bars, weighing 3.98 kg, have been seized from them, the DRI stated.

“In this well-coordinated operation, approximately 14 kg of smuggled gold bars were seized which have a market value of around Rs 7 crore,” it stated.

Officials stated all of the six accused, who’re native of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, have been arrested within the case. —PTI
