The Cabinet on Wednesday permitted a proposal to increase distribution of free foodgrains and pulses below the Pradhan Mantri Garib Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) to 81 crore PDS beneficiaries for 5 months until November.
The scheme was initially rolled out for 3 months until June to make sure no poor goes hungry throughout the COVID-19 disaster. Under the scheme, 5 kg of wheat or rice and one kg of pulses per 30 days are being supplied freed from value.
“The Prime Minister had announced that this scheme will be extended and the same has been approved by the Cabinet today,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar stated in a media briefing.
The PMGKAY has been prolonged for one more 5 months until November. About 203 lakh tonnes of foodgrains and 9.70 lakh tonne of chana will probably be given without spending a dime within the subsequent 5 months, he stated.
