After the BJP today asked why Congress’ top leadership did not visit the family of Hoshiarpur rape victim like they had in the Hathras case, the opposition party said the two cases were different, so were the state responses to them.
“There is a reason why many opposition leaders felt it was their prime duty to go to Hathras. In Uttar Pradesh, the police was not even ready to file a rape case, while the Punjab Police arrested the accused within 36 hours, registered a rape case after the DGP and the Chief Minister worked tirelessly to this end. The Punjab CM has insisted on exemplary punishment. The Punjab State Women’s Commission and the SC Commission have taken cognizance and asked for a report from the SSP,” Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev today said, explaining why Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders did not feel the need to visit Punjab.
She accused ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Harsh Vardhan and Prakash Javadekar of politicising the minor’s death in Hoshiarpur with Bihar elections in mind and said, “Stop politicising rape.”
Among other reasons Dev cited for why “people felt it was necessary to stand by the family members of the Hathras rape victim, which may not be necessary in Punjab, is that the UP Government left the Hathras victim for over 10 days in a hospital and 11 days without a forensic report which is a must in 24 hours”.
Third reason, she said why people may not be going to Punjab, but went to UP was that the Hathras administration geared up to threaten the victim’s family, whereas in Punjab “Chief of the state women’s commission has already met the family”.
