The Bharatiya Janata Party inducted and then expelled Kapil Baisala, the man who fired shot in the air at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh at the height of last year’s protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, after a video of his induction into the party drew widespread condemnation.
Baisala. who also goes by the name Kapil Gurjar, was expelled hours after he was inducted into the party’s Ghaziabad unit. The BJP said in its press statement issued after the furore that it had no knowledge of Baisala’s alleged involvement in the infamous incident and that he had been expelled as soon as the party heard about it.
The statement says: “Some youngsters were inducted into the party, among them Kapil Gurjar. We had no knowledge of his involvement in the Shaheen Bagh incident. The party has decided to expel him “.
Baisala fired two shots in the air at the protests on February 1 last year, leading to his arrest. He joined the BJP in Ghaziabad, media reports said. A video of his joining has gone viral.
The development drew condemnation from several quarters. Critics blamed the development, the second incident of anti-CAA protesters being shot at during the prolonged agitation, on vilification of the protests. It came in the runup to the Delhi assembly elections.
