New Delhi, August 23
Attorney General Ok Ok Venugopal has refused give his consent to provoke legal contempt of courtroom proceedings towards actor Swara Bhasker for her alleged “derogatory and scandalous” feedback towards the Supreme Court over the Ayodhya verdict.
“I do not think that this is a case where the offence of scandalising the court or lowering the authority of the court would arise. I, therefore, decline consent to initiate contempt proceedings against Swara Bhasker,” Venugopal stated in a letter addressed to advocate Anuj Saxena — who l had sought his consent for initiating legal contempt proceedings towards her.
Even within the Prashant Bhushan contempt of courtroom case, the Attorney General had final week urged the highest courtroom to not sentence the activist-lawyer. Under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, the consent of the Attorney General or the Solicitor General is required to provoke contempt proceedings towards an individual. — TNS
