“Based on the data provided by State Police, 97 persons have been reported dead till 09.09.2020 while travelling on board Shramik Special Trains during current Covid-19 situation/crisis,” the minister mentioned.

“The state police registers case under Section 174 of Cr.PC in cases of unnatural deaths and follows further legal process,” the minister mentioned.

Out of the 97 instances of loss of life, the state police despatched useless our bodies for put up mortem in 87 instances, the minister mentioned.

“Policing on Railways being a state topic, prevention of crime, registration of instances, their investigation and upkeep of regulation & order in Railway premises in addition to on working trains are the statutory accountability of the state governments, which they discharge by Government Railway Police (GRP)/District Police,” Goyal mentioned.
