US slaps sanctions on Hong Kong chief, different officers over ‘draconian’ regulation

WASHINGTON, August 7

The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on Hong Kong chief government Carrie Lam, the territory’s present and former police chiefs and eight different officers for his or her function in curbing political freedoms within the territory.

President Donald Trump had final month signed to punish China for its strikes in opposition to dissent in Hong Kong. The sanctions additionally goal Hong Kong Police commissioner Chris Tang and his predecessor Stephen Lo; John Lee Ka-chiu, Hong Kong’s secretary of safety, and Teresa Cheng, the justice secretary, the US Treasury Department stated in a press release. It stated Beijing’s imposition of draconian nationwide safety laws had undermined Hong Kong’s autonomy and allowed mainland safety companies to function with impunity. — Reuters
