Protesters set hearth to Guatemala’s Congress constructing

Guatemala City: Hundreds of protesters broke into Guatemala’s Congress and burned part of the building Saturday amid growing demonstrations against President Alejandro Giammattei and the legislature for approving a budget that cut educational and health spending. Discontent had been building over the 2021 budget on social media. Guatemalans were angered because lawmakers approved $65,000 to pay for meals for themselves, but cut funding for Covid patients. AP

US Rhodes Scholars chosen virtually for the 1st time

Washington: The US Rhodes Scholars for 2021 were elected virtually this year for the first time as the Covid pandemic swept across the globe. The Rhodes Trust announced the 32 winners early Sunday, which include 22 students of colour. Ten are Black, which ties the record for the most Black students elected in a single year.The winners were chosen from a pool of more than 2,300 applicants — of which 953 were endorsed by 288 different colleges and universities to study at Oxford University in England.
