Paris, August 30
A senior French military officer primarily based overseas has been arrested and handed preliminary treason costs for sharing extremely delicate intelligence with a overseas energy, authorities stated Sunday.
Europe-1 radio reported that the lieutenant colonel is accused of passing “ultra-sensitive” data to Russian secret companies. It reported that the officer served on a NATO base in Italy, and was arrested whereas on trip in France.
Defence Minister Florence Parly stated the officer is below investigation for “serious security breaches.” Speaking on Europe-1 on Sunday, Parly stated the French army has taken “necessary protective measures” because of this.
A treason investigation was opened in late July after the Defense Ministry alerted the Paris prosecutor’s workplace to suspect exercise. — AP
