Defendants acquitted in slayings of Slovak reporter, fiancée

A panel of judges in Slovakia has acquitted a businessman accused of masterminding the slayings of an investigative journalist and his fiancee.

Judge Ruzena Sabova on the Specialized Criminal Court in Pezinok introduced the decision on Thursday.

The judges cleared the businessman, Marian Kocner, and one co-defendant of homicide within the killings of journalist Jan Kuciak and fiancee Martina Kusnirova, each 27.

A 3rd defendant was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in jail for his function within the slayings.

Kuciak was shot within the chest and Kusnirova was shot within the head at their residence within the city of Velka Maca, east of Bratislava, on Feb. 21, 2018.
