Assessment petition towards Pearl killers’ acquittal

Islamabad, January 29

Pakistan authorities have filed a review plea in the Supreme Court against the aquittal of al-Qaeda terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and his three accomplices in the 2002 kidnapping and murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl, hours after the US expressed outrage over the decision terming it as an “affront” to victims of terrorism.

The review was filed by the Sindh government in the Supreme Court after its appeal against the acquittal verdict of Sindh High Court (SHC) was dismissed by the top court on Thursday.

The SC had on Thursday dismissed appeals and ordered the release of the accused, a judgement denounced by the American journalist’s family as “a complete travesty of justice.” — PTI

US outraged

  • White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has underlined the US’ commitment to secure justice for Pearl’s family.
  • The US is outraged by the Pakistan SC’s decision to affirm the acquittal of those responsible for Pearl’s murder, she said.
