In Covid times, it is imperative for individuals to strengthen their immunity. A huge population in our country suffers from deficiency of vitamin A and D. Keeping this in view, the Food Safety Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) is considering mandatory fortification of edible oil with vitamin A and D which will also help in strengthening the immune system.
Recently during a webinar on edible oil fortification, Arun Singhal, CEO, FSSAI, announced that the authority was considering making it mandatory to fortify edible oil with vitamin A and D, so that people of India can enjoy better immunity with good health. This will ensure that people belonging to different socio- economic strata will have an easy access to fortified edible oil across the country.
To facilitate the industry, the Food Fortification Resource Centre (FFRC) within FSSAI will also provide the necessary technical support required to enable fortification of edible oil at the industrial level.
“Cooking oil is extensively used in our country and fortification of oil can help overcome the nutrient deficiency. It can help in ensuring 25-30 per cent of the recommended dietary intake of vitamins A and D. In these times of pandemic, it is necessary to have a nutritious diet. Many people in our country are unable to get a nutritious diet and under such circumstances, fortification of oil can help to a great extent,” said a city-based dietician, Sudha Arora.
