I don’t get happy simply, says actor Surya Sharma

How was your journey from Himachal to Mumbai?

It all started when I was in third standard and got an award for acting. I was keen on sports and cultural activities in school and college. In my first year of college, I started theatre. My parents supported me and got me enrolled in Barry John Acting Studio and that’s how my journey started.

Tell us about your struggling days.

I started giving auditions and after 800 auditions, I got my first break in a show. It was a cameo of one minute but it was precious to me. I wanted to learn things on the job, and television gave that to me.

What made you move from television to movies?

In television there is a particular time frame in which you need to work. I wanted to grow further with my craft and then started auditioning for films. I did Veere Di Wedding, gained experience and then I got the web series Hostage and after that Undekhi happened.

Do you consider Rinku paaji of Undekhi as the turning point of your career?

From the audiences’ point of view, yes. I have set a benchmark and this journey of Rinku paaji will definitely enhance my acting career. As an actor I don’t get satisfied easily.

We hear Undekhi 2 is it on its way. Can you share some details?

Yes. We have not yet started shooting but I am super excited about it. The character of Rinku paaji is very close to my heart.

Which medium of entertainment are you most comfortable with?

I like web series and films the most. The 70 mm screen has a different appeal altogether. In web series format you can explore multiple genres as an artiste. In both the media, however, the director has a similar way of filming.

Who has inspired you?

My father has been a guiding force for me. Professionally, there are few like Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and others. I have learnt a lot from their films.

How do you unwind?

I travel to my hometown in Himachal Pradesh whenever I get time. And then in my free time I try to attend some workshops.

What is your wish-list for this year?

I would like to complete four projects this year.

Name two directors you wish to work with?

Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Kashyap.
